New Papworth Hospital: Two consortia proceed to next stage

Two leading European consortia have been named to proceed to the next stage of the development of the New Papworth Hospital to be built on the biomedical campus in Cambridge.

Following a competitive process under EU legislation, the three consortia shortlisted in November 2010 presented their bids to design, build, finance and maintain the New Papworth Hospital. After a detailed evaluation of the bids, the two consortia proceeding to the next stage of the procurement process are:

  • The Bouygues Consortium comprising Bouygues UK Limited, Ecovert FM Limited
  • Skanska comprising Skanska Infrastructure Investment UK Limited, Skanska Construction UK Limited, Skanska Facilities Services, OCS.

"This is a key milestone in the project to relocate Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust onto the biomedical campus in Cambridge. We are looking forward to working with the two consortia to develop a new Papworth Hospital which provides the highest quality environment in which to provide the best care for our patients." Said Stephen Bridge, Chief Executive at Papworth Hospital.

The project team at Papworth Hospital will work with the two consortia to further develop their bids, before a preferred bidder is selected and a contract between the Trust and the preferred bidder is signed, which it is anticipated will be in late 2012. The construction phase is expected to be complete by late 2015.

The project has unanimous support from NHS organisations across the spectrum as well as the full support of the Board of Governors of Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The new hospital will be based on an eight acre site on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and will include approximately 300 beds and a full range of clinical facilities.
