New Papworth Hospital given final approval

Papworth Hospital is pleased to announce that financial close has been reached for the New Papworth Hospital project, allowing work to start immediately on the Cambridge site.

"We are delighted to have reached financial close and be able to announce that work can now begin on the new hospital which will be located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

"Work surrounding this important project can now be brought to life on an internationally renowned biomedical and research campus. This move will allow Papworth to revolutionize cardiothoracic care and treatment in the UK whilst allowing the hospital to offer the best possible care and treatment to our patients and future generations.

"We look forward to seeing the hospital take shape in the coming months and opening our doors to our first patients in 2018," said Professor John Wallwork, Chairman of Papworth Hospital and former consultant cardiac surgeon.

Land for the new hospital, which is over 7-acres in size and centrally located on the campus, was acquired in December last year paving the way for work to begin as soon as financial close was reached.

The state-of-the-art new Papworth Hospital will offer cutting-edge facilities for patients requiring heart and lung treatment in a bespoke building on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The facilities will include:

  • 46-bed Critical Care Area including Cardiac Recovery Unit and Cardiac High Dependency Unit
  • 7 state-of-the-art theatres
  • 5 Catheter Laboratories
  • 6 inpatient wards and a 24-bed day ward
  • A centrally-located outpatient unit
  • State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities

Papworth Hospital Chief Executive Stephen Bridge, said: "I am excited and pleased to declare that the building phase of the New Papworth Hospital will now commence. It has been a long and stimulating process to get to where we are today and this would not have been possible without the support of our staff, who have worked tirelessly to provide the very highest standards of care our patients are accustomed to throughout the process.

"I would like to thank the wider NHS (the Department of Health, HM Treasury, NHS England and Monitor) for working with us to make this project a reality and my thanks also extends to local MPs, councilors and in particular Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Cambridge.

"I now very much look forward to seeing Skanska turn our dream into a reality."

Reaching financial close also provides the opportunity to continue to develop joint plans with the University of Cambridge to create a world-class Heart and Lung Research Institute (HLRI) alongside the new Papworth Hospital.

The HLRI will establish one of the largest concentrations of biomedical and scientific research into heart and lung disease in the UK leading to many future benefits to patients.

A significant fundraising endeavor in now underway to facilitate the building of the Institute which will aim to open within one year of the completion of new Papworth Hospital.
