Core Topics in Cardiothoracic critical care for nurses

The overall aim of the course is to provide a clinical education programme so we can deliver safe patient care and make improvements to the standard of care we provide. The course represents a bridge to fill the gap from student nurse status to newly registered professional nurse and represents staffs' first exposure to continuous professional development. Furthermore, the programme expects to develop an expert nurse who provides care to our patient group that is evidenced based and contributes positively to the patient’s experience and journey through our hospital.

The course is a key developmental programme and investment in our most important resource - our staff. It will enable us to develop nurses that will be our future clinical experts and leaders.

Aim of the course:
  • To develop essential and advanced clinical nursing skills to care for cardiothoracic patients requiring critical care support

  • To develop expertise in experienced nurses who are unfamilair with cardiothoracic critical care but wishing to devop a career in this speciality

  • Support the newly qualified nurse’s preceptorship and bridge the skills/learning gap as you move from student nurses to professional clinician

Course contents:
  • Infection prevention and control, management of sepsis
  • IV drugs therapy in the critical care area
  • Care of the cardiothoracic critically ill patient
  • Care of the patient requiring basic and advanced respiratory support
  • Rehabilitation practices and working within the MDT
  • Basic and advanced haemodynamic monitoring
  • The management of the patient in renal failure
  • Advanced respiratory and cardiac support: Care of the patient treated with ECMO and VADS
  • Transfer of the critically ill patient
  • Transplant surgery and pulmonary entartarectomy surgery

Assessment method:

Work based learning and an academic reflective diary


30 credits at masters levels.
The course is accredited by out partner university Anglia Ruskin University.

Eligibility and registration:

New members of staff who commence their career on critical care. Auto enrolment on commencement of employment. There is no registration or course fee and no exit fee should you choose not to complete the assessment element.
