Papworth Pharmacy


The pharmacy department provides a full clinical pharmacy service to all patients in the hospital. It operates in accordance with professional guidelines, policies and current legislation with the specific aim of providing a good quality, patient focused and cost effective service.

Clinical pharmacy services

Wards are visited daily (Monday to Friday), where prescription charts are checked and monitored to promote the effective use of medicines. Pharmacists advise medical and nursing staff, check for potential drug interactions and any other problems associated with medicine dosage, formulation or choice (e.g. within the Trust “formulary”).

Royal Papworth Hospital is working in collaboration with Cambridgeshire & Peterborough CCG and their provider Trusts to produce a Joint Formulary. This will see all prescribers in the area selecting form a common formulary; an initiative designed to improve standards of care and promote better utilisation of prescribing budgets.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Joint Formulary is due to be launched in June 2018. In the interim the existing Royal Papworth Hospital Formulary can be found below.

Pharmacists as a core member of the multi-disciplinary team

Specialist pharmacists cover Transplant, Thoracic (PVDU and Cystic Fibrosis inpatients), Critical care and Cardiology wards. Other pharmacists see patients at the twice weekly cardiac surgery pre-admission clinics, where they take a detailed drug and allergy history directly from the patients. The specialist pharmacists working within the Cystic Fibrosis specialty also undertake (annual review) detailed drug histories from their patients. The Medicines Management technician team are trained in both warfarin and discharge counselling and will therefore see patients prior to discharge to review and discuss their medication (new and existing treatments) with them.

The majority of patients who bring in their own medicines have them assessed for suitability to continue 'self administration' on the ward, if the scheme operates there, or they will be stored in patient’s bedside lockers and re-issued if suitable for continued use on discharge. Our 'One-stop' service ensures that where possible all medication is ready labelled prior to discharge for an individual patient who has also received counselling and information. This includes re-use of patients own medicines combined with supplies of newly commenced medication.

All ward stocks are provided by a 'top-up' service provided by pharmacy assistants and linked to the pharmacy stock control system to ensure good practice of stock rotation and stock availability at all times. Top-up is undertaken once weekly on the majority of wards, more often for some areas e.g. Critical Care unit.

The hospital formulary aims to rationalise the range of medicines stocked and used in line with published evidence and is currently being updated (see above).

Significant clinical interactions made by pharmacists are collated as a means of monitoring the impact pharmacists can input into medicines management and form the basis of training assessments for all trust staff in the safe use of medicines. Pharmacists undertake regular prescription audits and other medicines management related audit work is undertaken as part of the trust wide clinical audit programmes. Pharmacists also provide training to all trust staff who have any involvement in the prescribing and administration of medicines as part of the mandatory training of the Medicines Management Training Needs Analysis.

Outpatient dispensing

Outpatients are dispensed a maximum of 28 days supply in line with the Trust policy and clinical trial medication is dispensed from our dedicated clinical trials unit for those patients participating in clinical trials across the Trust.

Medicines Information (MI)

Pharmacy produces and disseminates a 'pharmacy factsheet' to all wards and this is also available on the hospital intranet for the use of all staff. There is an answerphone telephone helpline 01480 364739 for patients medicine related enquiries (Papworth patients only). Queries relating to any aspect of medicines usage are also answered using our MI resources 01480 364179.

Shared Care Guidlines

Shared care guidelines are developed when sophisticated or complex treatments that were initiated in secondary care are then prescribed by a GP. The guidelines set out the process that needs to be followed for the GP to take on prescribing responsibility following their agreement to take on the shared care.

Successful shared care arrangements enable the combination of the best of both primary and secondary care for the benefit of the patient. They allow the seamless transfer of patient treatment from the secondary care sector to general practice.
