Thoracic oncology

The Thoracic Oncology service at Papworth Hospital provides an investigation service for patients with suspected lung cancer. Currently the service investigates around 1,000 new patients a year. The emphasis at Papworth Hospital is on investigation, diagnosis, surgery, and management of pulmonary complications of thoracic cancer and uses the expertise of all the disciplines.

Advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques are available within the unit. These include:

  • Endobronchial and endoscopic ultrasound
  • Medical thoracoscopy
  • Auto fluorescence bronchoscopy
  • Interventional bronchoscopic stenting
  • Tumour debulking
  • Tunnelled intrapleural catheter programme.

Papworth Hospital provides a rapid access service whereby patients undergo a full range of investigations including CT, bronchoscopy, or CT guided biopsy and lung function tests, usually in a single day. Results are collated and discussed by physicians, surgeons, oncologists, specialist nurses, radiologists and pathologists at multidisciplinary meetings.
