Lead ECMO nurse appointed to UK Intensive Care Society role

Royal Papworth Hospital’s Lead ECMO nurse Jo-anne Fowles will draw on her extensive experience of caring for critically ill patients as the newly appointed Nurse Representative on the UK Intensive Care Society (ICS) Seminar Committee.

Along with Dr Alain Vuylsteke, Jo-anne developed the Cambridge ECMO Course, training multidisciplinary teams in the technique which supports patients with respiratory and/or cardiac failure by oxygenating blood outside the body. She aims to use her experience to contribute to the development of the multidisciplinary education programme of the ICS.

She said: “By representing nurses on the Intensive Care Society Seminar Committee I will be in a position to encourage nurses and other members of the team to share their expertise, and ensure that excellent practice and innovation continues to be discussed."

The ICS is a multi-disciplinary membership organisation which provides educational resources, support and advice to members, patients and relatives. It is dedicated to supporting the delivery of the highest quality intensive care in the UK.
