Results published this week from the 2024 NHS Staff Survey show small improvements in the reported working experience of staff at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The annual survey is framed around nine key elements: the seven themes of the NHS People Promise, plus staff engagement and morale.

In all nine areas, the trust's results are slightly better for 2024 when compared with 2023, continuing a trend of steady improvement over the past two years. Our 'recommender' scores as a place to work and a place to be treated also increased.

For the second year in a row, Royal Papworth scored the highest in the specialist hospital peer group for the question ‘I can eat nutritious and affordable food at work’. Three quarters of respondents answered this question positively (74%), compared to an average across all specialist hospitals of 56%.

Oonagh Monkhouse, Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, said: “It is encouraging to see improvements in all the main themes of the survey. They may be small, but we moved closer towards the average in our peer group of specialist hospitals and were above average in the ‘we work flexibly’ theme.

"However, there are also areas that are disappointing and concerning. We will continue to further analyse the results in the coming weeks to decide where we need to start, stop or continue focusing efforts to improve people’s experiences of working in our hospital.”

Eilish Midlane, Chief Executive, added: “Thank you again to everyone who filled out the 2024 survey. It was really pleasing to see the response rate increase from 56% to 58%, because this makes the results more reliable and representative.

“Responses are anonymous, but they all add together to create a clear picture of how people are feeling, helping with decision making for the year ahead.

“We want our staff to fulfil their potential by providing a working environment where they feel valued, listened to, and engaged, because this will deliver even better patient care.

“I am really looking forward to meeting staff in upcoming survey feedback sessions so that, together, we can continuously improve.”
