The Respiratory Physiology department is staffed by 16 fully qualified physiologists, who specialise in respiratory testing. Many members of the team have completed a full 3 or 4-year degree course in clinical physiology, others have been trained at the hospital, or have come from a sports science-based education.

Some of the team specialise in the tests they perform, such as in Bronchial Challenge Tests or Oesophageal Manometry. Staff are trained to a very high standard in performing the routine and advanced tests within the department.

The department also offers training to students and newer members of staff choosing a career in respiratory physiology. Patients will always be asked if they are happy to be tested by a trainee. These tests are always supervised by qualified members of staff.

DSC_0515.JPGHow long have you worked at Royal Papworth Hospital?

Since 2015, but I worked at CUH for 10 years prior before taking on the joint head position.

What attracted you to the job?

I’ve always been fascinated by the human body and how it works, so I knew I wanted to work in an area that would allow me to discover how the body functions. There is also the opportunity to undertake research, so it’s just the ideal role.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Getting the best results possible while building confidence and rapport with a patient who may never have undertaken the tests before.
