How long have you worked at Royal Papworth Hospital?
As a Consultant, since March 2012, but on and off as a junior doctor since 2003.
What made you choose a career in cardiology?
It provides a broad range of subspecialty training options, enabling one to choose to become almost a hybrid between a physician and a surgeon, as we have the opportunity to assess, diagnose and provide long-term cardiology care for our patients like traditional physicians, but also undertake physical interventions, such as stent implantations or pacemakers, that can hugely and immediately improve the lives of patients. It also enables us to work closely with other disciplines, such as the cardiothoracic surgeons, which can be very rewarding.

The people I work with and the ability to make such a positive impact on a patient’s life
What’s been your most memorable day at work here at Royal Papworth Hospital?
The day I was told I was successful in my interview for a Consultant post.
How are you feeling about the move to the new hospital?
A mix of trepidation and excitement. Change can be a daunting prospect but we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a state-of-the-art cardiothoracic centre on one of the biggest biomedical campuses in Europe, linked to one of the best universities in the world. If we get it right it will be amazing.
