Dr Ruggiero qualified as a doctor at the University of Rome - Campus Biomedico and trained in general radiology in Rome. He undertook the two-year R25T Molecular Imaging for Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (New York, USA) and then he moved to the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). He was awarded a PhD from Erasmus University in 2012.

He obtained his subspecialty training in Cambridge (UK) at Addenbrooke’s hospital (cross sectional radiology), Papworth Hospital (cardio-thoracic radiology) and Southampton University hospital (cardiac MR). He is currently working as consultant cardio-thoracic radiologist in Papworth Hospital. He covers the full range of cardio-thoracic imaging including cardiac MRI and interventional cardio-thoracic diagnostic procedures. He is a member of the pulmonary vascular disease unit at Papworth Hospital.

He trained and performed research in advanced methods of nuclear and optical imaging within the department of Radiology and Nuclear medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. His research was focused on innovative approaches of response to therapy by using 89Zr-radiololabelled anti-PSMA antibodies in prostate cancer and on novel carbon nanotubes platforms for targeted imaging. Also, here he produced some of the earliest publications on the use of Cerenkov luminescence imaging. His PhD work focused on the noninvasive imaging (bioluminescence and 7T MR imaging) of stem cells implanted in the heart.Dr Ruggiero qualified as a doctor at the University of Rome - Campus Biomedico and trained in general radiology in Rome.
