Dr Hema Nair was a senior consultant in Cardiac Anaesthesia for 18 years at Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences (NICS), a large volume cardiac centre in Bangalore, India. NICS is part of Narayana Health (NH) a corporate health care provider in India. Around 30 cases of varying complexity are performed here every day, roughly half of which are children with congenital heart disease. Dr. Nair’s own caseload on a typical day was between 3 to 5 cases, both adult and paediatrics. The post also included faculty responsibilities, both academic teaching and training on the job. She was also examiner for the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.
Dr. Nair has a keen interest in the study of Human Factors and its impact on Medicine. She was part of a project that studied non-technical skills in operating room teams at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital, Vancouver. This was an undertaking by the BC patient safety and quality council, Canada.
She was awarded the Greenshoots award for first time PI by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and this enabled her to helm two clinical trials being undertaken in the RPH Critical Care.
The aim to gain better experience in cardiothoracic transplantation is what brought Dr. Nair to the UK and Royal Papworth Hospital in 2021. After gaining entry into the GMC specialist registry with a CESR, she was employed as a substantive consultant in 2024.
