Dr Woolhouse undertook undergraduate medical training at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne then moved to the West Midlands to complete his training in respiratory medicine.

He completed an MD thesis on pulmonary leukocyte recruitment at the University of Birmingham. Dr Woolhouse went on to lead the lung cancer service at University Hospitals Birmingham and was responsible for implanting innovative new pathways including straight-to-CT and endobronchial ultrasound.

At a national level, Dr Woolhouse led the National Lung Cancer Audit and Improving Outcomes project then moved to the role of clinical director of the audit and accreditation department at the Royal College of Physicians.

He was also seconded to the health service quality improvement partnership to lead on a health foundation funded improvement programme.
