Dr Marina Hughes, Consultant Congenital Cardiologist

Dr Marina Hughes is the Clinical Lead for Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Royal Papworth Hospital, having joined the team in 2018. She originally trained in paediatric cardiology at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, and then moved to the UK and worked to become the Clinical Lead for Cardiac MRI at Great Ormond St Hospital in London. Her career has focussed on non-invasive cardiac imaging.  Her passion and special expertise is Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT, for adults and children with congenital and inherited heart disease.

Dr Clive Lewis, Consultant Cardiologist and Transplant Physician

Dr Lewis is a consultant cardiologist and transplant physician, specialising in congenital heart disease, advanced heart failure, cardiothoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. He joined Royal Papworth Hospital in 2006 from Great Ormond Street Hospital and The Heart Hospital where he trained. Dr Lewis has a special interest in the health of young people, transition and the adult congenital heart disease service. Current roles include Deputy Medical Director of Royal Papworth Hospital, Lead Appraiser, Director of Medical Education, Cambridge University Associate Lecturer and Senior Clinical Tutor.

Dr Catriona Bhagra, Consultant Cardiologist (interest in ACHD and heart disease in pregnancy)

Dr Catriona Bhagra is a consultant cardiologist with a joint appointment between Addenbrooke’s and Royal Papworth Hospitals with sub-specialist interests in adult congenital heart disease, heart failure and cardiac MRI. She was appointed in October 2016 following higher specialist training in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Toronto where she undertook a post CCT fellowship in adult congenital cardiology and heart disease in pregnancy. Dr Bhagra specialises in the management of pregnant women with ACHD and provides individualised pre-conception counselling to all patients considering pregnancy.

Dr Patrick Calvert, Consultant Cardiologist (special interest in device closures)

Dr Patrick Calvert is the National Specialty Lead for Cardiovascular Disease, specialising in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease prevention, for the National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network. He graduated from the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford and trained in the Eastern Deanery. He undertook a PhD at Cambridge University investigating vulnerability in coronary plaques resulting in several publications and prizes. He undertook a Fellowship in Paris in 2010 at Center Hospitalier Bichat. 
 

Dr Lynne Williams, MBBCh, PhD, FRCP Consultant Cardiologist (special interest echocardiography)

Dr Williams moved to Cambridge in August 2013 to take up the post of Consultant Cardiologist in Echocardiography at Papworth Hospital, as well as to develop a Specialist Cardiomyopathy service. Dr Williams undertook the E.D.Wigle Fellowship in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Research at the Toronto General Hospital, during which she trained in Inherited Cardiomyopathies, Advanced Echocardiography, and Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

Dr Claire Martin, Consultant Electrophysiologist

Dr Claire Martin is a Consultant Electrophysiologist at Royal Papworth and works with the Adult Congenital Heart Disease team to provide heart rhythm management input. She has trained in the management of arrhythmias in congenital heart disease at three world-leading cardiac centres: Barts Heart Centre and Great Ormond Street Hospital, London under Dr Martin Lowe, and subsequently at the Hopital du Haut-Leveque, Bordeaux under Dr Nicholas Derval. She has expertise in the ablation of cardiac arrhythmias and implantation of cardiac devices, and works with Prof O'Neill at Guys and St Thomas' Hospital, London to provide interventional treatment for arrhythmia conditions.' 

Nursing Staff

Carole Phoenix, SSN in Transplantation and ACHD Lead Nurse

Carole has worked in the Transplant Unit at Royal Papworth Hospital as a senior nurse since 1995. She joined the ACHD service in 2009, she has extensive experience in working with patients who have long term conditions. Her specialist interest is Transition which provides support and help for young people and their families transferring from the paediatric to the adult service. Carole is also on the Hospital Safe guarding committee and works closely with patients with learning difficulties.

Francisco Olano (Kiko), S/N Transplant and ACHD

Kiko trained in the Philippines and came to work in the UK in 2010. He joined Royal Papworth Hospital in 2017 after working as a staff nurse in theatres. He currently works as a Staff Nurse within the Transplant Unit and is heavily involved  in caring for patients with ACHD.

Admin Support Staff

Chloe Papworth, ACHD Coordinator

Chloe started working at the Royal Papworth Hospital when the new site first opened in May 2019 as a Receptionist working on the wards. Chloe was then appointed the position of ACHD Co-ordinator late 2019. Chloe organises and takes care of all the administration for the ACHD service including referrals. She also helps and takes care of the administration for the three Congenital Cardiologists and Lead Nurse Carole. Chloe registers patients and helps to co-ordinate their clinical pathway. Chloe also communicates with the booking team, takes patient general enquiries and directs them to the relevant team members if needed.

Maxine McColl, Booking Supervisor

Maxine has worked at Papworth Hospital for over 7 years firstly in Critical Care and then in the transplant Out- Patient Clinic. Maxine moved in September 2018 to work at Royal Papworth House in Huntingdon as a booking Supervisor for Transplant and ACHD. Her role is to make appointments, book relevant tests and answer telephone and email quires the patients may have.

Jeanette Vale, Booking Supervisor

Jeannette works at Papworth House in Huntingdon. She  is responsible for booking  out patient appointments, both for the Transplant and ACHD clinics.  Jeanette also books any additional tests that patients require, and she will answer any telephone queries patients have about their appointment.

The ACHD team also works with the other specialist teams at Royal Papworth Hospital.  These teams also greatly contribute to the care for ACHD patients:
