All Second Primary Lung Cancer CoHORT Study (SPORT) participants across 13 UK sites, including Royal Papworth Hospital, will complete their face-to-face study visits by the end of February 2026. A total of 850 participants were recruited between January 2020 and September 2024 and provided blood samples during their face-to-face follow-up study visits. A certificate has been distributed to participants at their final visit in recognition of their contribution to the SPORT.

Many participants also consented to take part in the second phase of the research, which will continue for a further five years. This phase will involve remote follow-up using data from NHS Digital Registries to track participants’ cancer journey records after face-to-face visits have concluded.

Funded by Cancer Research UK, the SPORT study aims to identify and help to develop new ways to diagnose cancer at an earlier stage. Click here to read more about the SPORT Study.
