Emma Harris, Lead Nurse for the Interstitial Lung Disease service:
"Many of our patients have chronic progressive lung conditions. Over the last few years new and innovative treatments have become available to patients and as nurses we play a key role in caring for patients and helping to maintain them on treatment. Nurses can make a significant difference to the ILD patient group by providing high quality care from diagnosis through to palliation. Working within the service I have been able to complete my degree and undertake a master’s degree."
Healthcare Support Workers
Also known as healthcare assistants, we have a range of opportunities available and you can join us at any stage in your journey, from the nationally-recognised care certificate course through to the level 5 nursing associate apprenticehip. There are no set entry requirements.
Direct entry programme
We employ you (you could even be entirely new to healthcare) and put you straight on the level 5 programme, essentially employing you as a nursing apprentice and supporting you the entire way through to a Band 5 nursing role.
Patrycja Ziemska, respiratory nurse who began at Royal Papworth as a healthcare support worker:
“I’ve been working at Royal Papworth for more than eight years now. I started in 2011 and began studying for my adult nursing degree in 2014. Thanks to the support of my colleagues and management I was able to qualify as a staff nurse last year. I love being on the respiratory ward because of the variety and complexity of the conditions we treat. I am proud to be a part of this team.”
Allied Health Professionals
Allied Health Professionals comprise a number of disciplines at Royal Papworth Hospital, including; dietitians offering nutritional support to patients; speech and language therapists; and occupational therapists who provide support to people whose health prevents them doing the activities that matter to them.
Helena Brown, speech and language therapist:
“I’ve completed a number of competencies and training courses since joining Royal Papworth six months ago. I feel very privileged to have those opportunities, as you wouldn’t normally get them as a band six therapist.”
