  • Dr Helen Baxendale

    Dr Baxendale joined the Clinical Immunology Department at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in February 2011. She is based in the Centre for Lung Infection (incorporating The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre, The Lung Defence Clinic and The Immunology Clinic) where she leads the clinical immunology service for investigation and management of patients with recurrent lung infection and immunodeficiency.

    She also holds an Honorary Consultant contract at Addenbrooke’s Hospital where she provides paediatric Immunology care and works closely with clinicians providing the adult immunology service. Dr Baxendale holds an Honorary academic position at the University of Cambridge.

  • Professor R. Andres Floto MA PhD FRCP, Consultant Physician

    R. Andres Floto is a Wellcome Trust Investigator and Professor of Respiratory Biology in the Molecular Immunity Unit of the University of Cambridge (based at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology), Research Director of the Cambridge Centre for Lung Infection at Royal Papworth Hospital, and Director of the UK Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Innovation Hub. 

    His basic research is focused on understanding how macrophages interact with bacteria, how bacteria evolve during chronic infection and transmission, and how forward and reverse genetics can be combined with fragment-based drug discovery to develop novel antibiotics and host-directed therapies.

    His clinical research is centred around tackling chronic inflammation in CF and non-CF bronchiectasis, treating Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM), and using graphical model-based machine learning to understand and predict pulmonary exacerbations in CF. 

    Clinically he specialises in the management of Nontuberculous mycobacteria, Cystic Fibrosis, non-CF bronchiectasis, and recurrent chest infections
    He co-chairs the British Thoracic Society NTM guidelines committee, the joint US CF Foundation-European CF Society (ECFS) NTM Guidelines Group, and the ECFS working group on NTM.
     

  • Dr Charles Haworth, MD FRCP, Consultant Respiratory Physician

    Charles Haworth is a Respiratory Consultant working within the Cambridge Centre for Lung Infection at Royal Papworth Hospital where he specialises in treating adults with bronchiectasis, non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections and cystic fibrosis.

    He co-authored the British Thoracic Society Bronchiectasis clinical guidelines published in 2017 and the European Respiratory Society Bronchiectasis clinical guidelines published 2019.

    He was also senior author of the International Cystic Fibrosis NTM guidelines published in 2015 and first author of the British Thoracic Society NTM guidelines published in 2017.

    Between 2018-2021 he was a founding and executive committee member of the UK Cystic Fibrosis Medical Association.

    In June 2024 he was invited to join the Board of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society.

  • Dr Uta Hill, Consultant Physician

    Dr Uta Hill is a respiratory consultant in the Cambridge Centre for Lung Infection contributing to the Cystic Fibrosis service and the Lung Defence and Immunology services.

    Her areas of expertise include cystic fibrosis medicine, aspergillus-related lung disease, non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection, primary ciliary dyskinesia, chronic pseudomonal infection and medical education.

    She is the Deputy Foundation Training Programme Director at Royal Papworth Hospital.

  • Dr Chris Johnson, Consultant Respiratory Physician, Chief Medical Information Officer, Clinical Director for Thoracic and Ambulatory Services

    Chris Johnson is Clinical Director for Thoracic and Ambulatory Services at Royal Papworth Hospital and Consultant to the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit and Lung Defence and Immunology Service.

    The Lung Defence Clinic oversees the care of >2500 patients with bronchiectasis associated with primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, chronic Pseudomonal infection, non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease, Aspergillus related lung disease, rheumatoid arthritis, serious childhood infection, chronic aspiration and primary ciliary dyskinesia.

    The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit oversees the care of >425 patients with Cystic Fibrosis living in East Anglia and beyond.  Both services provide inpatient care, outpatient reviews and a comprehensive home intravenous antibiotic service supported by Specialist Nursing, Physiotherapy and Dietetic teams.

  • Dr Nicky Simler, Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine

    Dr Nicky Simler is the Clinical Lead for the Cambridge Interstitial Lung Disease Unit. She graduated from Manchester Medical School in 1993. Dr Simler completed an MD Thesis whilst working in the Interstitial Lung Disease service at Wythenshawe Hospital investigating the role of pro-angiogenic cytokines in interstitial pneumonia.

    She completed her higher respiratory training in North West Thames with experience in the Royal Brompton Interstitial Lung Disease service before taking up her consultant role in Hinchingbrooke and Royal Papworth Hospitals in 2006.

    Dr Simler has an interest in Clinical Trials and is currently the Respiratory Specialty Lead for the Eastern Clinical Research Network.  She is also the Training Programme Director for Respiratory Medicine in the East of England.
